Instrument

The LAP¢ç-3000 is a pulsed Doppler radar that operates in clear air, reporting data from the Earth¡¯s atmosphere three kilometers or more above ground level. The technology for the radar profiler was developed by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The manufacturer of the profiler is Vaisala Inc.

The LAP¢ç-3000 gives information for successive strata of the atmospheric boundary layer, creating profiles of wind data. From these profiles comes the generic name ¡°wind profiler¡± for this type of weather radar. As also configured with a Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) option, the wind profiler additionally provides profiles of virtual temperature data.
